Notable Street Artists: Andre Charles

Notable Street Artists: Andre Charles

Another famous street artist whose work we are excited to feature at United Streets of Art is Andre Charles. His signature art is vibrant and his works are prolific. His iconic NYC designs can be found on some of our unique women’s wallets, cool luggage tags, passport holders, key chains, leather coin purses, and much more…

Born in Brooklyn in 1968, Andre Charles was raised in the Bronx. He is well known in the world of street art as a pioneer of the graffiti movement of New York City in the 1980s, and today is arguably the most successful street artist to hail from New York City.

Andre Charles struggled in school as a result of ADHD and dyslexia. He learned to focus his energy through creating art. His works debuted initially in the streets and subways of the city, when he began tagging at just twelve years old, and he has since become a significant influence on youth culture. He designed widely, creating flyers for the circus and other events. He created and sold custom T-shirts to dealers in his neighborhood, and businesses began hiring and paying him to decorate local shop fronts.

Charles had his own street studio on the Bronx’s Grand Concourse at the age of eighteen, which was known as The Zone. He soon began creating memorial wall murals and has been commissioned to create these all over New York City. Notable memorial walls he has created include murals for Tupac Shakur, Mother Teresa, artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Diana, Princess of Wales.

Andre Charles is also noted for his “Baby” tag and “Baby Brandon” character.

In the 1990s, Charles centered his influence on lower Broadway, Washington Square Park, and on Manhattan’s Eighth Street. He was commissioned in 1992 to craft a youth oriented voter registration program for Bill Clinton’s first election campaign. He also became active in nightclub promotion for the Red Zone.

Charles’ star continued to rise and by 2005 he was working to create custom art for the DKNY clothing line by Donna Karan. Today, he welcomes kids from his neighborhood into his studio to offer a hand and to give them a place to hang out in safety.
