Street Art Spotlight: FKDL

Street Art Spotlight: FKDL

One unique and instantly recognizable world-renowned street artist is known by the moniker FKDL. Otherwise known as Frank Duval, he is a French painter and collage artist who joined the street art scene in 2006, living and working from his home base in Paris.

Formally trained and qualified in drawing, he moved into painting as well as creating using ink and acrylics in the 1980’s, and later adopted scotch art – which is art created with the help of newspaper and tape.

FKDL as a pseudonym for Frank Duval was born in 2006, when the artist participated in the Citizen’s Arts event in Paris’ Blancs Manteaux. He created a series of silhouettes from black paper, placing these in the streets, and from there he has evolved his style into striking wall collages.

FKDL as an urban artist is inspired by fashion, celebrity, lifestyle and cinema dating between 1920 and 1970.

The work of FKDL has decorated walls in Paris, London, Berlin, Turin, Brussels, Barcelona, New York City, Guadeloupe and Guyana. He has also exhibited formally in various galleries and exhibitions.fkdl3

Some of FKDL’s most striking work includes his homage to glamorous women of cinema. He takes inspiration from idealistically beautiful women from the 1950’s and 1960’s, from dancing figure silhouettes to jazz swingers and beatniks, and such famous visages as those of Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor.

One such particularly striking piece is his tribute to Audrey Hepburn in Brussels, depicted circa “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Elizabeth Taylor’s image is also included on this striking wall. The piece was created in the city close to the date of what would have been Hepburn’s eighty-fourth birthday.

Unlike many other street artists, FKDL is open to having his true identity known, and often appears photographed with his artworks…
